Why your Google Ads get clicks but no leads

Short answer

Check, in order: that tracking works, that search terms are relevant, that the ad and page match, that the page is easy to act on, that location and schedule make sense, and that enquiries get a fast reply.

Few things are more frustrating than watching ad money go out and no enquiries come in. The good news is that clicks without leads almost always have a cause you can find and fix. This guide walks through the usual suspects in the order we’d check them. If you’d like help, our Google Ads service starts with an account review.

First, check that tracking works

Sometimes leads are arriving but the account isn’t recording them. Submit your own form, tap your phone number and click your WhatsApp button, then see whether each appears as a conversion. If tracking is broken, nothing else can be judged properly. See conversion tracking in plain language.

Are you attracting the right searches?

Open the search terms report in Google Ads and read what people actually typed before clicking. Look for words like “free”, “jobs”, “course”, “DIY” or “cheap” if you sell premium services, or unrelated products. Add these as negative keywords so you stop paying for them. Broad keywords with no exclusions are the most common source of wasted spend.

Does the ad promise what the page delivers?

If the ad says one thing and the page says another, visitors leave quickly. The headline on the page should echo the ad. Check the page on a phone with fresh eyes: can you tell within a few seconds what to do next?

Is the landing page doing its job?

  • One clear action, with a visible button.
  • Proof close to the button.
  • A short form.
  • Quick loading and easy to use on a phone.

Our guide on what makes a landing page convert covers each of these.

Are you showing ads at the wrong times or places?

Check the location and schedule settings. Ads shown outside your service area, or at hours when nobody answers, bring clicks you can’t turn into customers. Also check device performance: if mobile visitors rarely enquire, the mobile experience may be the problem.

Is the offer right?

Sometimes the traffic is right and the page is fine, but the offer doesn’t match what people want at the price you show. Compare your offer with the competitors who appear beside you. A clearer guarantee, a faster response or a more specific service can change results.

Do you respond fast enough?

Leads can be arriving and still be lost. If enquiries wait hours for a reply, many will have moved on. Instant acknowledgement and quick follow-up make a large difference. Read lead follow-up on WhatsApp.

Is the budget realistic?

A very small budget may not produce enough data to improve, and a very competitive market may need a higher spend per click. Work backwards from what a customer is worth, as explained in our Google Ads guide.

A simple order of checks

  1. Tracking works.
  2. Search terms are relevant.
  3. Ads and landing page match.
  4. The page is easy to act on, especially on a phone.
  5. Location, schedule and devices make sense.
  6. The offer is competitive.
  7. Leads get a fast reply.
  8. The budget fits the goal.

Questions

How long should I wait before judging my ads?

Give campaigns a few weeks to gather data, but fix obvious waste, such as irrelevant search terms, straight away.

Should I increase the budget to get more leads?

Not before the basics work. More budget on a leaky setup simply wastes more money, so fix tracking, targeting and the page first.

Could the problem be my website and not the ads?

Very often. A good ad sending people to a weak page is one of the most common causes of clicks without leads.
